When Ford tried to buy Ferrari and ended up creating the Ford GT40

The story of how Ford GT40 was created

In the 60s, Ferrari Spa was a pretty successful builder of racing cars. It was the brand to be beaten (it still is in some areas these days), the place to be, the good-looking girl everybody wants to flirt with. It was the time of the mighty and exclusive Ferrari 250 GTO or the amazingly hot Ferrari 330 (pictured below) as examples. During 1963, Ferrari employed 450 people and was able to build around 600 cars a year (that’s not even 2 per day).

Charles Ivey Racing Team - 24hr Le mans winner in 1981, 82 & 83 (class 2) with Porsche

People often ask me how a small independent garage could create a racing team that could win the class 2 at Le Mans 3 times; between 1981 and 1983. The answer is love.

It was not love in the way I love my family but the love of building and nurturing an amazing racing car. Charles Ivey racing raced a Porsche 935 in 1981 and 82 then a 930 Turbo in 1983. These cars became everything we lived for.

Bruce McLaren won the 24 Heures du Mans in 1966 with his Ford GT finishing second

As you might be aware, we are great fans of Bruce McLaren and also the McLaren brand itself. It really has provided a lot of great moments in motorsports. We particularly like this story, as it is one of the more dramatic finishes of a race in history. Following the Le Mans tradition for racing we think is even more dramatic than the 2016 finish we recently lived between Porsche and Toyota.

A classic car involved in an accident became more valuable

A fatal accident in motorsports it is always a shame. For many reasons, especially if it involves spectators. At the end of the day drivers are pursuing their dreams and they know the risks they run (or they should) but the audience is the blood and passion of the sport. I’d always think all the experienced drivers even if they die young; they have had more fun in their lives than others much older than them, but anyway, let’s move on to this rare example.
